OVERVIEW OF VIETNAM FISHERIES SECTOR  

Ÿ Land area: 329,560 sq km

Ÿ Coast line: 3,260 km

Ÿ EEZ area: 1 million sq. km

Ÿ Total production in 2019: 8.15 million MT (Capture: 3.77 million MT and  Aquaculture: 4.38 million MT)

Ÿ Export turnover in 2019: US$8.6 billions

Ÿ Labour force: more than 4 millions

In particular, the processing and seafood export sector brings jobs to about 300,000 workers.

Ÿ Fishery is a key national economic sector: take 4-5% GDP;  9-10% of total national turn-over and rank 5th for export value (follow: electronics, garment, crude oil, footwear). One of the top 5 seafood export countries of the world with high export rate to the world’s top markets such as the US, EU, Japan 

VIETNAM FISHERIES PRODUCTION

The country’s fisheries production increased from 4.9 million MT in 2009 to 8.1 million MT in 2019, the average annual growth was 5%. Of that, aquaculture production accounted for 53%, fishing output made up 47%.

Aquaculture production

2009 – 2019: Aquaculture output increased by 69% from 2.6 million MT to 4.4 million MT, the average annual growth was 6%. Aquaculture activities were mainly in the Mekong Delta (accounting for 95% of total pangasius production and 80% of total shrimp production)

Fishing production

Total number of fishing boats (2019):  96.600 Boats. Of which 47,448  boats with length of 6-12m (49%); 18.687  boats of 12-15m (19%) ; 27,856 vessels of a length of 15-24m (29%), 2,618 fishing vessels have a length> 24m (3%). Wooden fishing vessels account for 97% (93,406 vessels), the rest are steel or new material vessels.

2. Overall objectives

According to Decision No. 1445/QD-TTg of August 16, 2013, approving the master plan on fisheries development through 2020 with a vision toward 2030, the fisheries sector will be basically industrialized by 2020 and modernized by 2030 and continue its comprehensive, effective and sustainable development and become a large commodity production sector with a rational structure and forms of organization of production and high productivity, quality, efficiency and competitiveness, firmly integrate into the international economy, step-by-step increased income and living standards of farmers and fishermen; while protecting the eco-environment and fishery resources and contributing to safeguarding national defense and security at sea and on islands.

2. A number of specific targets to 2020

a/ Total fisheries output will be around 7 million tons, of which fishing output will make up around 35% and aquaculture output will account for around 65%;

b/ Seafood export value will reach around USD 11 billion, with an annual average growth rate of 7-8% (during 2011-2020);

c/The proportion of exported value-added products will reach 50%;

d/ About 50% of fisheries workers will be trained;

dd/ Workers’ average per-capita income will triple the current amount;

e/ Post-harvest losses in marine catch will be reduced from more than 20% at present to below 10%.
